Concrete Steps Calculator

Home › Concrete & Masonry › Concrete Steps Calculator

This concrete steps calculator estimates the volume of concrete needed to pour solid stairs, plus the number of premix bags. Enter the number of steps, the width, the rise and run of each step and any top landing.

How to Use the Concrete Steps Calculator

  1. Enter the number of steps.
  2. Enter the width of the stairs.
  3. Enter the rise (height) and run (tread depth) of one step.
  4. Add the depth of the top landing if there is one, and a waste allowance.

Concrete Steps Formula

Volume = Width × Run × Rise × n × (n + 1) ÷ 2

Solid steps are poured as one block, so the bottom step is one rise high, the second is two rises high, and so on. Adding them up gives the n(n + 1) ÷ 2 factor. A top landing adds Width × Landing depth × Total height.

Example

Three steps 4 ft wide with a 7 in rise and 11 in run need 4 × 0.917 × 0.583 × 6 = 12.8 cu ft. With 10% extra that is 14.1 cu ft, or 0.52 cu yd: about 24 bags of 80 lb premix.

Recommended Step Dimensions

DimensionTypical
Rise6–7¾ in (15–19.5 cm)
Run (tread)10–12 in (25–30 cm)
Width36 in minimum; 4–5 ft for entry steps
LandingAt least as deep as the door width (often 36 in)

Check the rise and run against code with the stair calculator.

Tips for Pouring Concrete Steps

  • Build forms from 2× lumber and brace them well; wet concrete is heavy.
  • Bevel the bottom of the riser forms so you can finish the whole tread.
  • Fill the center of large steps with clean rubble or gravel to save concrete, keeping at least 4 in of concrete around it.
  • Order ready-mix if you need more than about 1 cubic yard.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much concrete do I need for 3 steps?

Three steps 4 ft wide with a 7 in rise and 11 in run need about half a cubic yard (13–14 cu ft) including waste.

How many 80 lb bags of concrete for steps?

Divide the volume in cubic feet by 0.6. For 14 cu ft, that is about 24 bags.

How thick should concrete steps be?

Solid steps are poured full depth. Steps over a void or framed form need at least 4 in of concrete and reinforcement.

Do concrete steps need rebar?

Rebar or wire mesh helps prevent cracking and is recommended for steps attached to a foundation or landing.
