Home › Cost Estimators › AC Replacement Cost Calculator
This AC replacement cost calculator estimates what it costs to replace a central air conditioner. Pick the system size in tons, or let the calculator estimate it from your home’s size, then choose the efficiency level to see a typical installed price range.
How to Use the AC Replacement Cost Calculator
- Choose your system size in tons. It is printed on the outdoor unit’s data plate as BTU (for example, 36,000 BTU = 3 tons), or in the model number (a “36” usually means 3 tons).
- If you do not know it, choose “Estimate from home size” and enter the cooled area.
- Choose the efficiency rating (SEER) you are considering.
Central AC Replacement Cost by Size
| System size | Installed cost |
|---|---|
| 1.5 ton | $2,000–$5,000 |
| 2 ton | $2,500–$5,500 |
| 2.5 ton | $2,700–$6,000 |
| 3 ton | $3,000–$6,500 |
| 3.5 ton | $3,100–$7,000 |
| 4 ton | $3,500–$7,500 |
| 5 ton | $4,000–$8,000 |
Cost by Efficiency (SEER)
| Efficiency | Installed cost | Unit only |
|---|---|---|
| 13–14 SEER (standard) | $2,500–$6,000 | $1,000–$4,200 |
| 15–16 SEER (high) | $3,000–$7,500 | $1,500–$5,700 |
| 17–18 SEER (high) | $3,500–$8,600 | $1,800–$6,100 |
| 19–21 SEER (very high) | $4,000–$10,000 | $2,500–$7,500 |
| 22–26 SEER (maximum) | $6,000–$11,000 | $3,700–$8,500 |
How the Estimate Works
The calculator takes the installed range for your system size and scales it by how much your efficiency tier costs compared with a 15–16 SEER system. In auto mode it estimates the size at 20 BTU per square foot, rounded up to the next half ton, which is a rough rule of thumb; hot climates, high ceilings and poor insulation need more capacity.
What Is Not Included
- Replacing the furnace or air handler (often done at the same time).
- New or modified ductwork.
- Electrical panel upgrades, line set replacement and concrete pads.
- Permits and refrigerant changes.
For single rooms, size a window or mini-split unit with our BTU calculator.
Ways to Lower the Cost
- Get a Manual J load calculation so you do not pay for an oversized unit.
- Ask about federal tax credits, utility rebates and manufacturer promotions for high-efficiency systems.
- Replace in spring or fall, when contractors are less busy.
- Compare at least three quotes for the same brand tier and SEER.
Sources for Cost Data
Prices are national ranges and change over time. Labor rates, materials and permit fees vary widely by region, so use these figures for budgeting and always compare several local quotes.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to replace a central air conditioner?
Most central AC replacements cost about $3,000 to $8,000 installed depending on size and efficiency, and more for 20+ SEER systems.
How much does a 3 ton AC unit cost installed?
A 3 ton central air conditioner typically costs about $3,000–$6,500 installed.
What size AC do I need for a 2,000 sq ft house?
Roughly 3 to 4 tons, depending on climate, insulation and windows. A Manual J calculation gives the exact size.
Is a higher SEER air conditioner worth it?
Higher SEER units cost more upfront but use less electricity. They pay back faster in hot climates with long cooling seasons.
