Asphalt Calculator

Home › Concrete & Masonry › Asphalt Calculator

This asphalt calculator estimates how many tons of hot-mix asphalt you need to pave a driveway, parking area or path. Enter the area and the compacted thickness, and it converts the volume into US tons, metric tonnes and cubic yards using a standard asphalt density.

How to Use the Asphalt Calculator

  1. Enter the length and width of the area to pave.
  2. Enter the compacted thickness of the asphalt layer.
  3. Add an allowance for uneven ground and edges (5% is typical).
  4. Optionally enter the price per ton to estimate material cost.

Asphalt Tonnage Formula

Tons = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Thickness (ft) × 145 lb/cu ft ÷ 2,000

Most hot-mix asphalt weighs 142–148 lb per cubic foot once compacted; the calculator uses the 145 lb average (about 2,323 kg/m³). Suppliers sell asphalt by the ton, so converting volume to weight is the key step.

Example

A 50 × 12 ft driveway paved 3 in thick has a volume of 50 × 12 × 0.25 = 150 cu ft. 150 × 145 = 21,750 lb, or 10.9 tons. With 5% extra, order about 11.4 tons.

How Thick Should Asphalt Be?

  • Residential driveways: 2–3 in of compacted asphalt over 4–8 in of compacted gravel base.
  • Paths and patios: 1.5–2 in.
  • Parking lots and heavy traffic: 3–4 in or more, often laid in two layers (binder and surface course).

Calculate the gravel base separately with our gravel calculator.

Asphalt vs Concrete Driveways

Asphalt costs less to install and handles freeze-thaw cycles well but needs sealing every few years. Concrete lasts longer and needs less maintenance but costs more upfront; compare with our concrete driveway cost calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many tons of asphalt do I need for a driveway?

Multiply length × width × thickness in feet, then multiply by 145 and divide by 2,000. A 600 sq ft driveway at 3 in thick needs about 11 tons.

How much does a ton of asphalt cover?

One ton covers about 80 sq ft at 2 in thick or about 55 sq ft at 3 in thick.

How much does asphalt weigh per cubic yard?

Compacted hot-mix asphalt weighs about 3,900 lb (roughly 2 tons) per cubic yard.

How thick should an asphalt driveway be?

Most residential driveways use 2–3 inches of compacted asphalt over a well-compacted gravel base.
